Environmentally Friendly

Environmentally friendly describes both the process and the products we produce. It is a term to define the source of the materials, the means by which they are processed and the effect which they will have on our environment. It is not only about protecting the health of the earth, air and water, it is also about minimizing any harmful effect such products can have in the home. By buying and using environmentally friendly products we get the confidence that we have minimized our impact on our environment, and we are doing what we can to maintain a healthy home. The cost of buying these alternative materials will add to the cost of the project, but the difference is typically less than 10%. These options will be presented at the time of design.

Materials. At Stick and Stone Studio we are committed to finding and using materials which have been selected and marketed for their use of good environmental management practices. This means using wood that has been certified by the Smart Wood Program which, with the Forest Stewardship Council, ensures that the wood is being harvested using the most sound forest management practices. Just about all species of domestic wood are available with the certification. It is now possible to buy tropical hardwoods and veneers with the FSC certification as well, although they are less readily available.

Another opportunity to mitigate the impact of wood harvesting is to rely on recycled and rediscovered woods. Manufacturers are now offering composite boards (alternative to plywood) made from recycled pulpwood. This produces a high quality sheet good which may be either veneered or painted for cabinetry. The latest developments also include composite boards made from renewable sources such as straw! Rediscovered wood indicates wood that has been salvaged and given a new life, whether from dismantled barns or salvaged barges. This wood represents a current source for old growth, high quality wood.

Healthy Homes. Many consumers today have become aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy interior environment. Many man-made materials have been proven to contribute to indoor air pollution through the outgassing of Volatile Organic Compounds. The EPA has begun to regulate and limit our exposure to such chemicals, but as a consumer you can further limit such problems by choosing products which avoid these harmful compounds. Furniture and cabinetry is one potential source for these pollutants and Stick and Stone is offering solutions. At the client's request we will choose materials which are free of formaldehyde glues and finishes and paints which are formulated to offer the least exposure to VOCs. These products are all readily available and are priced competitively with the traditional materials, so the cost of these benefits is minimal.
